New fad diets always popping up, either a doctor creates one and says it’s safe and effective or a friend says it worked for them. Unfortunately, some of these diet fads are based on quack medical science and are designed to make use of your insecurities for one purpose and one purpose only: to get at your wallet.
We realize having these catchy diet trends in your face all the time can lead you to be confused of what you should do to lose weight. Pinterest seems to be the newest trend when looking for the newest way to lose weight. At Omaha Barbell, the only reason our weight lifts and gym members would entertain information form Pinterest is if it’s sharing a really yummy “cheat” meal recipe or cool t-shirt design.
The general rule of thumb is that you’ll want to stay wary of suggestions from entertainment websites attempting to provide diets tips and trends. As fitness experts, we suggest you to start with the basics: evaluate your diet, track what you are putting in your mouth and get moving! You’ll find that most fad diets might have one of these areas covered or even in some cases two, but they fail at giving you the “fast and easy” fix to losing weight. Unfortunately, this is the biggest myth out there! Losing weight is a hard job, but when done effectively it can change your life!
In most cases, especially with women, the main reason you’re looking to start a diet is to lose weight. While several of our gym members in Omaha love lifting heavy things, we do also have members looking to become healthier — and losing weight is the best place to start. At Omaha Barbell, we also love learning about the goals of other people so we might be able to assist with their questions.
Evaluate your diet – track what goes in your mouth!
When it comes to wanting to lose weight, the best area to start is determining what you are currently eating. With our busy lives, you can often find yourself putting bad foods into your body without even realizing it. Think about it, you have a big term paper deadline that has you stressed to the max. You get up early in the morning, pop a pop-tart in the microwave and head out the door. For lunch you realize that you need to eat, however you don’t have the time or energy. You believe the quickest thing to do is pop into a QT gas station and grab yourself a hot dog (or two), a bag of cheesy doritos (nothing says yum like comfort foods), you know you’ll crash after eating so you grab a red bull and head back to your apartment to finish your research. By the time you look up from your computer you realize it is 9 pm and you’re fatigued, starving, and suffering from a case of “I need to get away from my computer for a bit.” You grab your car keys, call your best bud, and head to a local pub to celebrate your hard work. The last meal to go into your mouth is a cold beer and a double cheeseburger with fries. Does this example sound familiar?
We’re not here to judge your good or bad eating habits. We do want you to know that even being involved in the fitness industry, we also have slip-ups from time to time. The idea behind losing weight is that you have to burn more than you put into your mouth. When you follow the above example 5, 6 or even in some cases 7 days a week– the pounds can and will start to add up.
Our fitness experts at Omaha Barbell recommend everyone start tracking what’s going into your mouth. When you write down what you’re eating, you’ll start to see your eating patterns, in addition to the “triggers” that cause you to crave certain foods. Maybe it’s the long hours, maybe it’s the fact that you eat most of your carbs at night (typically known as the munchies fix). In either case, tracking your food will help you find out where you are so you can know where you’re going.
If you’re looking to just lose weight quickly, a diet fad might work for you but if you’re like all of our Omaha Barbell gym members, you’re looking for a long term fix in your weight loss. We recommend that you recognize that in order to lose weight, you need to not only watch what you eat but you need to commit to making a lifestyle change. It, ultimately, will do you no good to eat clean for three months, hit your ideal weight, and then bounce back into old habits. Instead commit that you want a healthier you and make it happen. Hit your goal and make a new one!
